Winter is Coming….to College

Game of Thrones has made its way into many people’s lives but this coming Spring, it is making its way into college courses.

Professor Samuel Avery at the State University of New York at Cortland will be offering a course based on the first three Game of Thrones books and how they compare to the HBO show.

Avery expresses:

As an educator, it has been my experience that college students are generally alliterate – meaning that they CAN read but choose not to. This is problematic because the act of reading is often so closely linked to the success of a person. The more a person reads, the better a person writes and the better a person writes, the more successful that person is likely going to be.

There are many colleges who are now offering courses based around television shows. Syracuse University offers courses on Doctor Who and Star Trek and Buffalo State offers one on Breaking Bad. This is not uncommon. In fact, the University of Virginia had its own Game of Thrones course this past summer that discussed fan culture and online spoilers that really make you question the logic and theories behind the characters and story.

While Avery also explains that the HBO show will be discussed, the texts will be the primary source. Through analyzing the first three texts, students will look into storytelling techniques and character development. Avery also expresses that the class will be fun because he plans to split up his students into different houses and have them ‘fight it out’ as Starks, Lannisters, Baratheons, and Targaryens. He ultimately explains that his students should be ready for betrayals, battles, and book in the Spring.

Personally, I think this is fantastic! I wish my school would get courses like these. I would love this! I think it’s a great idea because it’s a course on something you actually want to read whereas most literature classes don’t have very enjoyable material. As someone who has taken countless literature courses in school, I can say that not every piece of material is fascinating. I would love to take a whole course dedicated to Game of Thrones.

What do you guys think? Would you take this course? Any problems you see with it? I’m curious as to how compelling Avery’s argument was with the Dean in order to get this class going. I really wonder about that. Haha

Showrunners Confirm Bran Will NOT Be In S5

-a98c2a3b-7209-4785-98df-d8405b672dd1

http://moviepilot.com/posts/2014/06/16/game-of-thrones-season-4-finale-spoilers-crossbows-and-toilets-review-1517089?lt_source=external,manual

A few months ago when Kristian Nairn (Hodor) announced that his character and the character of Meera would not return for season 5, Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Bran) did considerable damage control by explaining that he was filming for the show when in fact, his character will not appear in the upcoming season.

D&D have officially confirmed that Bran will not appear in the next season and here is their reasoning as to why:

It made sense to stop where we did. He’s now entering a training period which is going to take quite some time, much of which isn’t particularly cinematic. So rather than being stuck in a cave for a year, we figured it would be interesting to leave him out for a bit.

Now, this makes complete sense when you think of the fact that Bran’s story line reached the end of Dance With Dragons at the end of season 4 whereas other characters are not completely there yet.

D&D had this to say about that:

The fact is, even though we’re making changes to the books and adapting as necessary, we’re trying to keep the various storylines the same as the books and trying to keep them roughly [chronologically] parallel. Last year we caught up to the end of Bran’s storyling [in ‘A Dance With Dragons’]. So, if we pushed him forward this season, then he’s way ahead of where the other characters are

Seems that much thought went into this decision and I’m happy for that. I think it will be odd to not see Bran for an entire season and it definitely will be weird when season 6 airs and Bran is suddenly back BUT, at the same, it gives a sense of ease to the mind because a lot of fans were concerned that the showrunners were going to travel into material that George R.R. Martin has not even published yet.

So, does this really mean Bran won’t be in season 5? His storyline may not progress but the showrunners did reveal they were using flashbacks this season so maybe we can still see Bran in those. -Fingers Crossed-

Fans Thought Sophie Turner Was Whose Bride-To-Be?

In recent news, the Sherlock star, Benedict Cumberbatch, recently became engaged to theater director, Sophie Hunter. However, with the excitement following the news, fans managed to mix up the names and started congratulating our own Sansa Stark, Sophie Turner as the bride to be.

Some fans were happy for her while others thought it was weird. One fan even offered her condolences to the eighteen year old actress. Rude, but okay.

But, Sophie Tuner herself got in on the action and set the record straight:

At least she has a good sense of humor! However, I can see why so many people found it odd. Cumberbatch and Tuner are actually a good twenty years apart in age and I know some people say age is just a number but whoah….twenty years?! Anywho, I found it quite comical and Sophie’s tweet made it even better!

What do you guys think? Do you find it odd that so many people got it confused or do you find it humorous like I do?

Daznak’s Pit Stunt Video

First things first, you have to watch the video!

Original Video – More videos at TinyPic

Okay, so this has been by far the coolest thing I’ve seen! Obviously those are trained stunt men but now it’s time to speculate as to what is going on….let’s do this.

So, this scene was filmed for Daznak’s Pit which as I’ve mentioned before is where we will see Daenerys Targaryen for a time this coming season. However, it seems that something is going extremely wrong. With looking at the stunt scene a view times, a conclusion has come into my mind: Drogon has returned and he’s angry!
Drogon is my favorite of the three dragons and as we remember from last season, he disappeared and no one has been able to find him whereas his siblings are currently being locked away from society. Seems like Drogon is a tad bit upset with that news.

However, other than a few photos of the set itself and tons of extras, it is unclear still as to what will completely happen during this scene.

Whatever the case, this makes me 10x more excited for season 5 but you can definitely check out the article HERE and there are a few photos you can look at as well.

Hope everyone enjoyed!

EDIT: Okay, so it seems the video has been removed and I cannot find another one anywhere. I’m assuming it was removed due to potential spoilers. However, if you did not get a chance to see the video, it shows at least 6 stunt actors being set on fire with a flame thrower which sparks the speculation that the scene in question will be showing Drogon’s return. I don’t want to take down this post because it does give some information on upcoming news of the show but if the video resurfaces, I’ll post a new link. Again, I do apologize and I hope you understand 🙂

Cast Signs for Seventh Season

As we heard back in April, Game of Thrones has already been renewed for a sixth season but as of recently, HBO is now planning to renew for a seventh season and this means that major cast members have already signed on. Also, HBO has increased pay raises for some of the major cast members which makes them the highest paid actors on television right now. However, with this news, which actors signed for a seventh season and what does that mean for their characters?

However, it still has not been given the green light by HBO yet but it seems they are already taking steps to ensure that a seventh season happens.

As we know, the cast is very diverse and the show employs what they call a “tiered system” to compensate the stars.
According to Hollywood Reporter:

The “A” tier – which includes actors Kit Harrington (Jon Snow), Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Lena Headey (Cersei Lannister), Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen), and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) – is paid at the highest level.
The lower-salaried “B” tier – which is said to include co-stars Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell), Sophie Turner (Sansa Stark), Maise Williams (Arya Stark) and others – is said to be scoring raises as well in exchange for season seven options.

It really comes as no surprise that negotiations for cast members salary have come into play considering on how popular this show is. The season four finale by itself drew in 7.1 million total viewers and as a whole, the show draws 18.6 million viewers across multiple platforms and views.

However, even if they do sign for a season seven, that doesn’t necessarily keep their characters safe. George R.R. Martin is notorious for killing off major characters and he still has two more books to write. As of now, it seems a season seven will come into play for us fans but that doesn’t mean our favorite characters will make it to the series finale.

What do you guys think? What characters do you think will be killed off before the final season or book? I personally think Tyrion is going to get the ax before it’s all over. He’s just too good of a character and even though Martin has said Tyrion is his favorite character to write, he also said that no character is safe. However, I have this sick image that Martin just spins a wheel with characters names on it and whichever name the wheel stops on, that’s who he kills. I don’t know….sounds a bit odd but who knows! Haha!

“Do you know what it is like to be sold, squire? I do. My brother sold me to Khal Drogo for the promise of a golden crown. Well, Drogo crowned him in gold, though not as he had wished, and I…my sun-and-stars made a queen of me, but if he had been a different man, it might have been much otherwise. Do you think I have forgotten how it felt to be afraid?”

This originally appeared on my Tumblr dashboard but I later saw it appear again on RSS feed. The original poster was daenerysstormborn on Tumblr. I really wanted to share this with everyone because it is absolutely beautiful and really captures the essence of Daenerys!

George R.R. Martin Critiques the Iron Throne

When you think of Game of Thrones, you definitely think of the Iron Throne in all of its beauty sitting inside the Red Keep. However, the author of the critically acclaimed series says that no one ever gets the iconic throne correct.

The throne is forged from 1,000 swords and the person who sits there is the Ruler of the Seven Kingdoms. Many fans have recreated their own versions of the throne and HBO was even selling a version of the chair for $32,000!

At the event for Martin’s new book The World of Ice and Fire, he explained:

Nobody ever got it right. There were comic book versions, and there were versions in the card game and the board game, and there were versions on the cover [of books], and there were versions that were done for conventions. The very first…there was a wooden one that I sat on in 1996…but none of them were ever really right.

Martin did continue by saying that a French artist named Marc Simonetti did come close to a depiction of the throne and Martin enjoyed it so much that he and Simonetti collaborated for The World of Ice and Fire.

iron-throne

This is how the real Iron Throne should look. This image appears in “The World of Ice and Fire” and was painted by Marc Simonetti.

With this being how the throne should look, Martin described why:

I said repeatedly the Iron Throne is huge. It towers over the room like a great beast. And it’s ugly. It’s asymmetric. It’s put together by blacksmiths not by craftsmen and experts in furniture manufacturing. You have to walk the iron steps, and when a king sits on it he’s like 10 feet above everybody else…He’s in this raised position looking down on everyone.

However, with this being said, Martin does know that HBO cannot replicate the actual Iron Throne he had in mind because of its massive scale. He even says he loves the version HBO has because of how well it has served the show but its still not the throne he sees when writing his novels. He also knows that the throne he has in mind won’t fit into the sound stage the show uses for the Red Keep.

I think that the Iron Throne that Martin envisions is amazing…terrifying, but amazing. However, I’m also glad that he knows that it’s not possible and that he does not have have a huge deal with the throne used on the show. The actual Iron Throne is too massive! It also looks rather painful to sit on. But, can you just imagine Joffrey sitting on the throne Martin originally envisioned? Oh my, that would have been quite the sight!

Celebrating Good Times on the GoT Set

dany1

Filming in Spain is dwindling down to its final days but in recent news, it seems the production team surprised Emilia Clarke (Daenerys Targaryen) with her very own ‘Mother of Dragons’ themed cake.

According to WiCNet:

A few tweets suggested it was “her name day” but we’re unclear if they mean the name day of the character she plays, or the name day of Clarke herself.

I do not believe they were celebrating the name day of Clarke herself because her actual name day falls on May 1 but as far as the character, I’m not entirely sure when her birthday is. Does anyone else? Are there any clues in the books?

WiCNet speculates:

The Most Precise ASOIAF Timeline In Existence puts it at May 5th.

Not entirely sure if this is true but WiCNet did provide a source for this assumption so check it out HERE

Whatever the reason, this is absolutely so sweet of the production team and the cake looks fantastic and it’s just amazing! Check out some more photos below!

If you cannot read it, it says, ‘We fight and die for your honor, Oh glorious queen’

How sweet! Also, the Targaryen house sigil is a nice tough as well!

‘Game of Thrones’ Telltale Game in the Works

Maybe you’ve heard of Telltale Games and maybe you haven’t. But, if you happened to have played their ‘Walking Dead’ season games then you most likely know who they are. That is what makes me so excited for this game! I love the ‘Walking Dead’ games and I cannot wait to see how they pull off ‘Game of Thrones’.

The official announcement was released in 2013 but it said to be released by the end of 2014 although no official date has been announced.

According to GameSpot:

Over the past two months, the developer has released various teasers about the game’s setting, but we have not yet heard much in a way of specifics. What Telltale has said, is that its Game of Thrones title will be “taking advantage of all the [series’] fiction.”

Well, this sounds exciting! Telltale does amazing stories and I cannot wait to check this out! What does everyone else think? Wanting to play or do you want to skip this one?

It also seems that the company is currently working on a ‘Borderlands’ spinoff and a third season for ‘The Walking Dead’

Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did! As always, Valar Morghulis!

Charles Dance Returns to the Small Screen for Syfy Miniseries

Charles Dance returns to the small screen to appear in Syfy’s new mini-series ‘Childhood’s End’. We last saw Dance portraying Tywin Lannister who was killed in last season’s finale episode.

According to IGN:

The series, based on Arthur C. Clarke’s classic novel, “follows the peaceful invasion of Earth by the mysterious overlords.” Karellen (Dance) is the Overlords’ ambassador, and first makes contact with human Ricky Stormgren. Karellen quickly wins over the human population, but when he refuses to show his physical appearance and only speaks through Ricky, Earth’s people begin to question Karellen’s motives.

Wow. Seems intense. Almost like a mix between ‘Invasion of the Body Snatchers’ and ‘War of the Worlds’. I could probably watch this. Although, with it appearing on Syfy, I have my hesitations about graphics.

‘Childhood’s End’ is set to be a six-hour mini-series that is to be directed by Nick Hurran who has worked on Sherlock and Doctor Who.

So, who is preparing to watch it when it airs? A release date is still unknown but it sounds interesting enough.
